On April 9, 2009, Mayor David Perkins and County Judge/Executive issued a proclamation recognizing April 2009 as Fair Housing month in Morehead and Rowan County. The local leaders took this action in response to the need for community education and as an effort to increase awareness of fair housing.
Fair Housing laws are dictated by state and federal laws that prohibit discrimination against any person because of race, color, religion, sex, disability, family status, or national origin. Fair housing laws apply to real estate agents, builders, insurers, brokers, and lenders. The City of Morehead and Rowan County supports fair housing in partnership with Frontier Housing. Frontier Housing, a non-profit corporation with a 34 year track record in affordable housing production, builds and develops single and multi-family housing in the City of Ashland, and the following counties: Carter, Elliott, Morgan, Magoffin, Wolfe, Menifee, Bath, Fleming, and Rowan. As part of its fair housing activities, Frontier has partnered with
Morehead State Public Radio for the past two years to offer a recording
studio opportunity to students in the sixth grade at Rowan County Middle
School. The students are presented with fair housing information and
challenged to create a commercial about Fair Housing. Winning teams are
then selected and travel to the studio at Morehead State Public Radio to
record their commercials, which air on local radio stations throughout the
month of April. This event has been very successful and the students look
forward to it. NeighborWorks® America Awards Grants. Read more* Published 2009-4-18 Clean Energy Corps takes hybrid bus tour and will visit Rowan County.
